Philosophy(Reflection Paper)

Reflection Paper Topics with Grading Rubric

You will write a 1000-1500 word response to your chosen paper topic from the list below. See Course Outline for the due date.

This assignment is worth 300 points, or 30% of your grade.

DO NOT USE ANY SOURCES OTHER THAN THE DALRYMPLE ARTICLE AND YOUR TEXTBOOK.

YOU WILL ATTACH A FILE IN THE BOX AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE.

Learning Objectives:

Students will demonstrate their ability to construct arguments about issues of both personal and universal significance. Their writing should demonstrate that they can construct cogent, concise, and logically coherent arguments.

Assessment:

Students should demonstrate that they can distinguish the relevant points that form a logically coherent argument. They should also be able to construct criticisms which effectively undermine, through the use of appropriate counter-examples, some premise of that argument.

Your assignment is to read any ONE of the following four articles located in the final chapter of the required textbook:

The Frivolity of Evil

How and How Not to Love Mankind

What We Have to Lose

Roads to Serfdom

Then, FOR THE ARTICLE YOU CHOOSE TO WRITE ON, you will type a 1000-1500 word response in which you address EACH of the following points IN YOUR OWN WORDS: 1) What is the author’s main argument? 2) How does he support his main argument (evidence, ancillary arguments, etc.)? 3) Do you agree or disagree with him? 4) Why or why not? 5) Apply the insights of at least two of the readings we have studied in this course (in chapters 1-9) to your analysis. Make sure to give a substantive explanation of how the philosophers’ insights are relevant to the topic you are discussing.

A WORD OF WARNING: These articles are rather long and complex. The author likes to make extensive use of his rather copious vocabulary, so I strongly urge you to have dictionary.com handy as you work your way through your chosen article. The purpose of this essay assignment is for you to demonstrate your ability to discuss, analyze, and evaluate complex philosophic arguments. I am confident that the reading assignments, tests, and discussion boards will have prepared you for this final, and no doubt challenging, essay assignment.

Note: I only allow one attempt on this assignment. Students who do not fully address all of the components of the assignment as stated in the instructions as well as the grading rubric below will have to be content with the grade they earned.

Please use MLA format.

xploring a Portfolio Topic; Developing a Working Thesis (Local/State)

In Module 1, you were asked to review the assignment instruction for the Module 8 Portfolio Project. The Portfolio assignment requires that you select a local or state social issue to explore causes and possible solutions.  As an academic writer, it is vital you form a working thesis about your topic early, so that you can shape your research and form an inquiry plan about the research material that you will be using. You will also need to select and analyze key concepts of the topic early in the research process.

For this Critical Thinking Assignment, you are to compose a working thesis that takes a definite position on an arguable issue and maps a few of the main points you plan to explore. Specifically, your working thesis should state a problem, describe and evaluate at least one aspect of the cause, and offer one potential solution. Be sure to accurately decipher your assignment (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..  Your paper should accomplish the following: Identify the particular topic (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. you have decided on. Develop a research question. Describe a specific controversy that exists within this topic. Identify the sides (and there may be more than just two sides). Explain why each side has the beliefs it does. Define which side you agree with and why. State the overall claim that you want your essay to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt. (This will be your working thesis, and it is apt to change as you progress in later weeks.  It is fine to start simple, for now, and build in more complexity later.  Be sure to review the thesis tools used in this module.  Also consider this video on writing a thesis: “Developing a Thesis Statement (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..”

For example, one could explore the recent boom in real estate values in a specific area of the nation or world.  While such a situation could be positive, it’s also possible that any dramatic increase in the cost and availability of housing could cause problems for some people. Within this topic, key concepts need to be discovered such as: what are the effects of changes in home valuations or how does sudden population growth affect a city? You will need to state and clearly specify your approach and position on the topic and argue the validity of it. You will also need to understand any possible arguments against your position.

Before you make a final discussion, try brainstorming. Choose two or three potential topics and explore the key concepts involved to see if the topic holds your interest and is achievable.

Requirements: Use third person. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. Assert your academic voice. Choose a topic related to a problem you would like to address and then ask a question about how to solve the problem.  The question must start with the phrase, “What would it take to . ..?” Answer the question with a thesis that names the problem, cause, and solution.    Describe why you made your final selection, and discuss in some detail the key concepts you think are important to that topic. Cite at least two sources for this assignment. You will have to cite several credible sources in your final Portfolio Project, so start exploring credible sources now. In academic writing, it is always best practice to cite credible sources such as a scholarly journal article. The CSU-Global Library is an excellent place to search for credible, scholarly sources. The following resource at the CSU-Global Writing Center should help you assess a source as credible: Types of Sources (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Your written paper should be 2-3 pages in length not counting the required title and reference pages. Your paper must be formatted according to CSU-Global Guide to Writing & APA (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. You may use the template paper for this course. (attached below)

Refer to the Critical Thinking Assignment Rubric in the Module 2 Folder for more information on assignment expectations and grading.

2/13 Activity

In lieu of meeting in person today, I have created this online discussion.  Each student is to post a primary post by 4 pm today, 2/13, and respond to at least two classmates by midnight tomorrow (2/14).  This is an adaptation of the activity that was planned for today, so hopefully most of you are prepared already.  Primary posts should be about 300-450 words, and responses should be between 250-350 words.  It’s OK if posts go over these limits, as long as you are not posting a five page essay!

Primary posts are worth up to 30 points, if they are posted by 4 PM today.

Responses are worth 10 points each.

The entire discussion is worth 50 points.

Instructions:

Choose 1 chapter from The Earth Knows my Name, read it carefully, and take notes.  Each chapter is an ethnography of an American community, focusing on the community’s garden, AND, each chapter is layered and reveals deeply held values, beliefs, and traditions within the culture.  This is not really a book about gardening, it is about culture, community, history, connections, and meaning.  Your notes should include as many of these connections as possible- as you read your chapter of choice, try to get at the beating heart of the culture being described.  This is what good ethnography does- meaning and connection come alive in the details.  This is the kind of reporting you are being asked to do in your assignments for this course, so hopefully you will get some ideas for Essay 2 and your Final Project while you are at it.  After 4 Pm on 2/13, students are to respond with breadth, depth, and singularity to at least two classmates.  You can also respond to the discussion question I posted, and one classmate.

In this discussion, you will discuss these connections, and you can your attach or paste in relevant points from your notes.  Your Primary Post should clearly state the chapter you focused on, and explore at least three connections to aspects of culture.  in this discussion, each student will: Describe the culture they read about. Elaborate on one aspect of culture that was described in the chapter. Pose a discussion question to the class, encouraging connections between the reading and our own lived experience. Respond to at least two classmates.  Discussion Question Example:  The Gullah communities described in Chapter 2, Freedom, cultivate more than plants in their gardens.  They actively create and strengthen their connection to their history, their ancestral homeland, and their language.  The Gullah reclaim and protect their identity in their gardens. “First you lose your costume. Then you lose your language. The last thing you lose is your food”(Freedom 65).Name a food that is connected to your culture and heritage.
What does this food say about your culture and your identity?

One post .

Post 2: Culture Objective:

The objective of this discussion post to discuss culture and recognize its vast fluidity. Instructions:

1. In Discussion Post_Culture, you will listen to the following Moth Story and two podcasts, provide a summary and reflect on each as it relates to your assigned reading on culture:

2. Next, share and describe something that you still practice in your culture, and discuss the origins (history) of it, such as religion, origin of country or  family tradition. For example, I am Mexican-American and when I travel to Mexico, I kiss the cheek of my friends when we see each other; yet, I do not practice this in the United States.  In Mexico kissing cheeks is something that is done among known acquaintances.  It is considered very forward to kiss someone on the cheek if you just met them.  You may kiss them on the cheek the second time you meet. Then discuss an aspect of your culture that you have changed due to cultural shifts around you and how you feel about it.  For example, I am Mexican American and when I was 15, I was suppose to have a Quinceañera, but due to growing up in a mostly white working class community, I opted not to participate in this celebration party of dressing up in a gown and having a formal dance in my honor as at the time I found it quite embarrassing because none of my friends had such a birthday celebration when they were 15. Though today, I recognize the value of this celebration, and it still continues in many communities; despite, my own experience, which made me feel ashamed of my own culture and identity.

3. This post should be about 300 to 700 words minimum.

James Joyce- Ulysses

Discussion Post on Circe

This is a description of the “Discussion Post” assignment worth twenty (20) points/percent of your grade.

To complete this assignment successfully, each student will produce two (2) bullet points about the Circe episode in James Joyce’s Ulysses. Each bullet point is worth ten (10) points. Below you will find the formal requirements of these bullet points: Each bullet points should be three (3) sentences in length. One bullet point should be derived from pages 408-90; the other bullet point should be derived from pages 491-565. Students may use information from the text itself or from the end notes for this episode on the text (920-43). Students may write about the same pieces of information from the novel, but students must come to independent conclusions about that information. In other words, no student should simply agree with or restate information/conclusions from another student’s Discussion Posts. These posts are due on Wednesday (20 February 2019) by 1:00 pm. Each student will have a space with her/his name in the “Discussion” section of our EC Learn page to post his/her bullet points. On Thursday (21 February 2019), students will use their Discussion Posts to generate a high-level conversation about this episode in Joyce’s novel or about this episode’s relationship to other episodes in the novel.

Please attend to my comments on your first bullet point assignment. I was very generous in my grading of that first assignment. These bullet points are attempting to communicate important information about the Circe episode to readers who have an investment in Joyce’s novel.
