reading response

Please note:  Your paper must be uploaded as a Word doc or pdf. Pages files must be converted to pdf. Pages files will not be accepted.

Beware of plagiarism! UF Canvas uses Turnitin plagiarism software. Plagiarism is a very serious academic offense. Do not borrow another person’s words or ideas without proper citation. Turnitin scans a database of papers previously submitted to universities nationwide, including UF.

READ the following article:  Carolyn Dean, “The Trouble with (The Term) Art,” 2006

Settings , and write a response paper (800-word minimum to 1000-word maximum) in which you do the following:

As you read the article, see if the author provides compelling evidence to support her claims. Does she follow through on the argument presented in her thesis statement? After you’ve read the article, ask yourself if the author’s argument is relevant. How does it relate to our course material? Does she appear to have any biases that would unfairly prejudice her research? Address all these questions in your response. This is a critical response, not a summary of the article you’ve read. Your responses should be critically engaged. Do not generalize or summarize. Provide specific examples from the article to support your point of view.

Avoid numerous or long direct quotes. If you do quote or paraphrase, be sure to cite your source. You should always cite your sources for anything you write, every time. To not do so constitutes plagiarism. A reading response paper doesn’t typically include multiple outside sources (it’s not a research paper)–unless your want to use them, which is be fine. The best format for a reading response paper is to follow the in-text citation style guide at link below. If you only cite the article you’re responding to, then you are only using one source. For this, you can simply give all the article information in your introductory paragraph, which you should do anyway– so no need for “sources” list at bottom of your paper. Then follow the guide for the style you prefer (see three options at link below) for in-text citation. In this case, typically just the page number. The important thing is to be consistent throughout your paper for the style you choose. If you do cite outside sources, then you need to list them at the bottom of your paper with in-text citation as directed in the guide.

*Be sure to have a look at the rubric criteria, below, for which you will be assessed. Once your paper has been graded, be sure to read the comments/feedback embedded in the rubric, and/or provided in the comment bubble below your grade.

Formal Analysis of a Painting(Art History)

Moonlit Landscape with Bridge

by:  Aert van der Neer

https://www.nga.gov/collection/art-object-page.71369.html

Format: 3 double-spaced, and numbered pages (no more than 750 words) in 12-point New York Times font.

Include the following items in your paper.

Your paper must have an original title that expresses your  main point or thesis. Information about the work:   artist, title, date, medium, etc.  Provide a good illustration of your work.  Put the illustration at the end of the paper, not embedded in your text.

Formal analysis does not mean simply describing what you see in a work of art, although description is a part of it. Analysis means looking at the work of art to try to understand what the painting expresses in terms of an idea or emotion. This will be your thesis statement.

Do not rely on the visual analysis on the website or any other source. Do not conduct further research into the painting. Doing so will result low grade.

Take notes on the subject and the formal elements and integrate your observations of three elements into the paper:

Technique: notice how each work is painted and in what medium. Oil painting allows for glazes and invisible brushwork. You will see brushstrokes in tempera and in some of the later mannerist works. What is the effect of the brushwork?

Color: what hues do you see? Is the color flat, warm, cool, harmonious, natural or unnatural, bright, etc. what is the effect of these colors?

Space: is the painting flat and shallow or does it have the illusion of depth, with linear perspective and/ or chiaroscuro? How does space create a specific visual effect?

Composition: how are the figures and other elements arranged? What is the effect of this arrangement? How are they posed?

Light & Shadow: high contrast, subtle, natural, artificial, soft, harsh, etc. What effect or mood does the light create?

Scale: consider the scale of the work and its significance. Is the work small and intimate or large and monumental? How does scale contribute to the work’s meaning?

Topic/Title— “In Dreams: Surrealism and the Human Condition”

The 20th century bore witness to the emergence of a trend towards art that explored the human condition—art that explored human psychology with bizarre, irrational, and nonsensical ideas and images.  Such ideas and images are usually associated with our dreams and nightmares (our subconscious experiences).  You will write an essay on this trend.  To do so, you must follow these criteria:

Focus your attention on the Surrealists—an early 20th-century group of artists who created fantastical, bizarre, and irrational art.  You must explain Surrealism’s artistic agenda and pay particular attention to what the Surrealists intended to say with their art.  You must also explain why the strange works of art produced by the Surrealists were timely—what they said about culture and society during the early 20th century.  Do not forget to cite specific artists and their works of art.  You cannot successfully write about this topic unless you do so.
